The features required of the controller by the company include high machine speeds of up to 3600 inches
per minute, high part accuracy under all cutting conditions, and extremely smooth motion providing parts
with the best surface finish possible. Unique servo algorithms
developed by NEE Controls, together with the the use of RISC processors and excellent motion control system
design, provide these features.
NEE assisted the company in their pursuit of perfect cutting finishes on clear acrylic
sheet. NEE’s engineers, with the aid of powerful NEE multi-axis machine tuning
software, were able to optimise machine smoothness by setting both controller and drive parameters
and to identify inherent limitations with the resolver commutated motors and drives initially fitted
which impared surface quality. The motors and drives were replaced
with encoder commutated motors and drives.

NEE AMC controllers have a number of selectable user options developed for Company D which further
enhance the machine’s capability, flexibility and productivity.
Part programs are usually generated in ISO GM code using MasterCAM.
Company D have tried alternative controllers from Delta Tau and Fanuc, they chose to use the NEE AMC
range because of:
- High control system performance
- Control system features and flexibility
- Ease of integration
- Very competitive control system cost
- NEE’s willingness to develop custom features
- The controls accept ISO G and M code job data directly
The company also manufacture moving gantry machines, these can optionally be fitted with multi-tool drilling heads that can have
up to 48 independently selectable drills. In this application the AMC standard I/O of 20 inputs and 12 outputs is extended by using
a remotely located OMRON PLC fitted near the tool head solenoids dramatically reducing system cabling.
Control and monitoring of the OMRON PLC is automatically performed by the AMC via an additional RS232 port.
