These pictures are of 7/16 inch thick clear acrylic sheet routed in two passes at 200 inches per
minute on a machine controlled by an AMC4 controller.
|
One picture shows the test part, this was designed to check a number of machine and control system characteristics, hence the unusual shape.
|
The second picture shows the edge quality of the same part, in appearance it has a smooth frosted or matt finish, fine vertical tool marks are
just visible. The finish is the same all the way around the part edge, there is no discernable difference at direction changes

The four most important requirements of an automated machine that are essential to achieve the
highest quality machined or cut surfaces finishes are:
- A rigid, stable machine
- A suitable and sharp cutter
- Motors with drives that run smoothly and that follow controller commands precisely
- A controller that has the capability to get the best from the 3 previous items
High finish quality requires smooth motion from the controller.
An additional requirement is that the system is correctly tuned. NEE Controls have developed
multi-axis tuning software which permits individual axes to be
tuned and also permits the interaction of axes to be checked and accommodated in the system
gains.
The parts produced were also very accurate. Accuracy is very dependent on the motion algorithms used in the controller
